A Weekend In Vienna: A Guide On How To Spend The Perfect Weekend Trip To Europe's Most Romantic
A weekend in Vienna is fantastic. As someone who has been to Vienna, I'll tell you this. A weekend trip will not only take you away from routine, but also introduce you to a city that has endless charm. For those of us who have never traveled abroad and are looking into where best to travel, Vienna might be a great place to start (at least if your goal is to visit Europe).
If you want to know how to spend weekend in Vienna like a local, then here are some useful tips that would help you out with getting the best out of your trip!
Day 1:
Start the day by visiting Schönbrunn Palace, a stunning Baroque-style palace with over 1,441 rooms and beautiful gardens. Be sure to take a tour of the palace to see the opulent rooms and learn about the history of the Habsburg family, who lived here for centuries. You can also take a train tour which is one of the best ways to explore the lush green property from in and out.
After touring the palace, head to the historic center of Vienna to see landmarks such as St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Imperial Palace (Hofburg), and the Vienna City Hall. Take a stroll through the charming streets and stop for a coffee or a pastry at a traditional Viennese café.
In the evening, catch a performance at the Vienna State Opera, one of the world's most famous opera houses. If you can't get tickets to a performance, consider taking a guided tour of the opera house instead.
Day 2:
Spend the morning exploring the museums and galleries of Vienna. Some must-see museums include the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History), which has a world-class collection of European art, and the Leopold Museum, which features works by Austrian artists such as Gustav Klimt.
In the afternoon, take a walk through the Vienna Woods, a beautiful natural area just outside the city with hiking and biking trails. Alternatively, you can go shopping in the city center or visit the Naschmarkt, a large outdoor market with food stalls, souvenirs, and more.
In the evening, enjoy a concert or other performance at Musikverein, one of the world's most famous concert halls. The Musikverein is home to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and hosts a wide range of classical music performances throughout the year.
Day 3:
Spend the morning at the Vienna Zoo, home to over 500 species of animals. The zoo is known for its innovative and naturalistic habitats, which are designed to replicate the animals' native environments as closely as possible.
In the afternoon, visit the Wiener Prater, an amusement park with rides, games, and other attractions. The park is home to the famous giant Ferris wheel, which offers panoramic views of the city.
In the evening, enjoy a traditional Viennese meal at a local restaurant. Some dishes to try include schnitzel (breaded and fried veal cutlet) and strudel (a type of pastry filled with fruit or sweet cheese). Wash it down with a glass of Grüner Veltliner, Austria's most popular white wine.
Pro tip - do visit cafe Sacher for the amazing Sacher tort.
There really is no better way to explore the reasons you might want to visit Vienna than a weekend trip. Arriving early on a Thursday morning and staying until Sunday evening means you really get to check out every corner of this great city. You also need enough time to take in all the tourist sites and see that Vienna is a simply wonderful place to visit.
